Company Profile

Sims Group, Newport, is one of the largest recycling centres in Europe. Facilities include an end of life fridge recycling plant, a television and personal computer monitor demanufacturing process, end of life vehicle depollution rig and a metals processing facility, supported by a dedicated rail link. These processes have been designed to minimise environmental impacts.

Sims Group Newport creates a different perspective on sustainability by converting materials previously disposed to landfill into valuable raw materials, whilst also facilitating new financial opportunities arising from cyclic use of recycled materials to our customer base within the UK and export markets.

Achievements

  • 17% increase in CFC collections (744,000 tonnes CO2)
  • 20% saving in energy, 16% nitrogen  -  £80,000
  • ELV depollution for 2800 vehicles
  • Increased production (>250,000 tonnes pa) of furnace feed for steel markets

Future Plans

  • Group-wide energy targets and CSR reporting
  • Develop business in accordance with future legislative issue such as landfilling tyres and the recycling of shredder waste in line with ELV targets
  • Develop a WEEE collection and transfer facility in Newport
