Deeside College is a Further Education college located in Flintshire.  The main campus provides 35,000m2 in which 700 staff provide a wide range of education and training for approx 25,000 students.

The College commenced the Green Dragon Environment Standard® in 2001 in order to demonstrate best practice and ensure effective management of the college’s environmental impact.  This year the College achieved Level 5.

Continually seeking improvements, and by involving students and the local community, the college has developed a sustainable approach to the environment.  The College believes that in order to protect the future a sustainable approach must be employed now.

Achievements

  • Achieved Green Dragon Environmental Standard® Level 5
  • Since 2003 reduced waste by 712m3 despite increased business
  • Since 2003 recycled 1,044m3 of waste - 17 recycling streams
  • Plastic recycling scheme

Future Plans

  • Establish sustainability programme involving students and the community
  • Extend sub metering and introduce departmental energy budgets
  • Develop the use of a renewable energy source (solar power)
