Carmarthenshire County Council’s commitment to sustainable development was recognised at the Wales Environment Awards 2003 with success in the inaugural ‘Management award for sustainability in the public sector’ category.

Climate Change was identified as the County Council’s sustainable development priority issue for 2005/06 and the Climate Change Strategy was adopted in March 2006 to reduce the Council’s emissions of greenhouse gases, improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.

The Environmental Stewardship Programme was established in 1999 to identify and reduce the wasteful consumption of energy and water in Council buildings.

Achievements

  • Re-Accredited for the Carbon Trust's Energy Efficiency Accreditation Scheme
  • 4.85% reduction in CO2 emissions through reduced energy use
  • Procured 63% of electricity from renewable sources, saving 906 tonnes CO2 pa

Future Plans

  • Carbon Management Plan to be produced by March 2007
